How a location QR code works

A location QR code encodes latitude and longitude coordinates using the geo: URI scheme. When someone scans the code with a phone camera, the device opens the default map app — Google Maps on Android, Apple Maps on iPhone — with a pin dropped at the coordinates. The scanner can then get directions, view the surrounding area, save the location for later, or share it with others. Optional label text appears as the pin's name. No address typing, no copy-paste — one scan, one map pin.

When to use a location QR code

Use a location QR code wherever you want someone to know exactly where to go, especially when the address is hard to find, ambiguous, or non-standard.

  • Wedding invitations and event venues — drop the pin precisely on the reception hall.
  • Food trucks and pop-up stalls — share today's location with one scan.
  • Hidden or hard-to-find venues — back-alley restaurants, rooftop bars, basement events.
  • Trailheads and outdoor meetups — coordinates for spots without standard addresses.
  • Grab/Gojek pickup spots — share the exact pickup pin on a shop window for ride-hailing drivers.

Need to update this later?

Pop-up locations move. Food trucks rotate. Event venues change last minute. A static location QR is locked to one set of coordinates. A dynamic location QR redirects through a short link that opens today's location — update from your dashboard, no reprinting. Scan analytics show you which placements drive the most foot traffic.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What map app does the QR code open?
Whatever the scanner's default is. On iPhone, Apple Maps. On Android, Google Maps. Both recognize the geo: URI standard the QR encodes. Users with a different default map app set will get that one.
Can I use an address instead of coordinates?
The QR encodes coordinates (latitude/longitude) for precision. To find coordinates from an address: open the address in Google Maps, right-click (or long-press on mobile), and copy the coordinates. Coordinates are more reliable than addresses for non-standard locations.
How accurate is the pin?
Latitude/longitude pins are accurate to within a few meters when entered correctly. For exact-spot navigation (e.g., a specific shop within a building), this is precise enough. For very tight spaces (a stall in a market), pair the QR with a short text label like "booth 24."
Does it work offline?
The QR is decoded offline (the coordinates are extracted), but opening a map app to view the pin requires a connection for the map tiles. Without internet, the scanner can still see the raw coordinates and use them in any offline mapping app.
Is the location QR free?
Yes. Free for static location QR codes — no signup, no watermark. Dynamic location QR codes (editable coordinates + scan analytics) require a free Build QR account.
Can I include directions in the QR?
The geo: format only encodes a destination, not a route. The scanner taps "Directions" inside their map app to get turn-by-turn navigation from their current location. For a pre-built route, use a URL QR code pointing to a Google Maps share-route link.
Will the QR work for food trucks that move daily?
Static QR codes are fixed; for daily-changing locations, use a dynamic QR code. Update the coordinates from your dashboard each morning; every printed QR stays current. Bonus: scan analytics show which spots drew the most curiosity.
Can I add a custom label to the pin?
Yes — set the label in the generator above. The label appears as the pin's name in the map app, useful for context ("Saturday Pop-up" or "Hidden entrance"). Without a label, the pin shows just the coordinates.

Need to update the link later?

Static codes bake in the destination forever. Dynamic QR codes let you change where the code points without reprinting. Start free with one dynamic QR included.
